Interactively coding a living system: live coding in Impromptu

Being of the static kind you may not have the ability to imagine changing a running, live software system without being in debug-mode.

You may not be able to feel the power of REPL – the pleasure of interactively, iteratively tinkering around with something that feels is alive.

You are feeling – like an egyptian slave building the pyramids. And you are feeling good!

I hope I won’t get you into a bearish mood after you have watched Stained – a quite impressive piece of interactive coding art performed by Andrew Sorensen which I got from Live Coding in Impromptu.

That clip is quite secretive – maybe this other clip may help in understanding: Movie Playback.

Both clips (and many more) is done with Impromptu:

Impromptu is an OSX programming environment for composers, sound artists, VJ’s and graphic artists with an interest in live or interactive programming. Impromptu is a Scheme language environment, a member of the Lisp family of languages.
